The best thing about adding a unity ceremony to your wedding day is that you get to include what traditions are important to you and your partner — or this could be the chance to start something new! Exploring different wedding rituals is one of my favorite things to do!
Lasso Ceremony
The Lasso Ceremony is a unity wedding ritual where the couple is bound together with a ceremonial cord. Traditionally, it is included as part of Latino weddings and those marrying in the Catholic church. After their vows, the couples’ “sponsors” (typically their parents) come up to the altar and place the rope in a figure-eight formation around the individuals, which then binds them together as one.

This ritual can offer different meanings, such as:
- The loops bind the pair together daily as they share in the responsibilities of marriage
- The infinity knot represents the infinite bond they will forever share
- The couple’s parents ‘let go’ as they give their blessing to their new chosen partner
This is one of my favorite rituals! Perhaps it’s because the couples can’t escape.
It’s also simple, you can include family members in the ceremony — or your lovely wedding officiant can perform the ritual. You can also choose from many different types of lasso’s; from plain white, to colored rope, and ropes with pearls, or beaded rosaries.
